What are the best Ways to Keep your grow space cool.

It’s the time served question, How do you keep your growing environment cool in the Hottest of British weathers?

There are a number of heat reduction technics and methods and these we have shared with you below.

1. Use a Portable Air Conditioner: Install a portable air conditioner unit in the grow tent to regulate temperature.

2. Use Fans: Place fans at strategic points to keep air moving inside the tent. This will help to prevent hot spots from developing, we have a number of fans to suit all  sized enviromnets,

3. Use Reflective Material: Line the inside of the tent with reflective material to reflect heat away from the plants, we sell a number of reflective foils to help keep heat out and the cool in.

4. Use a Dehumidifier: Install a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air. High humidity levels can cause the tent to feel hotter.

5. Use Temperature Control Devices: Install a temperature control device to turn the equipment on and off as needed. This will help to regulate temperature and reduce energy usage.

6. Keep Lights Off During the Day: Turn off any lighting equipment during the day to reduce heat buildup in the tent. Only use lights at night, our 24hr heavy duty timers will help with that.

7. Switch from HPS to LED lighting, the heat signature given off led lighting is close to 90% reduction.

8. Use an Environmental control device, Paying a touch more for a near automated control will be one of the best decisions made, You can program the environments ideals in temperature, light output, inlets, fan speed etc. Great for holiday cover. Wiring and equipment required for full control capability.

Our in house research team carried out a test to see if the LED GROWN propagation light would have better results than that of the fluorescent propagation light. We used the market leading t8 fluorescent propagation lamp to find out.

Nature of test,

To carry out testing on the LEDGROWN propagation light to see how it compares to the T8 Florescent Propagation light.

Equipment required and used

Jiffy Plug x 12 – ( 24 jiffy’s total)

2ltr mixing tray from the-hydro.shop
2 x Propagation Tent from the-hydro.shop
1 x Propagation wipes from the-hydro.shop
2 x Hygrometers from the-hydro.shop

1 x Vinyl gloves
1 x Jiffy plug tray ( cut down to fit each propagator)
2 x Heavy Duty Timer

Test set up,

1. Water mother plant two days before taking cuttings,
2. Set up the propagation tents, wipe down and disinfect tent to prevent any pathogens contacting the cuttings.
3. Set up the budget propagation units, wipe down and disinfect propagators to prevent any pathogens contacting the cuttings
4. Using the syringe add 4ml of Shogun Start and 5ml of Shogun Katana Roots per liter of water, add to the mixing tray with 1 liter of water.
5. Soak Jiffy plugs in fertilized water solution, until jiffy plugs expand/ swell.
6. Plug Jiffy’s in to respective jiffy trays squeezing out excess moisture as you do so.
7. Place jiffy trays in propagators.
8. Using the scalpel as a measure take cuttings from the mother plant, (length of scalpel approximately 10CM)
9. Decant CloneX into suitable container ( egg cups are great for this), once you have prepared the cutting, dip into decanted clonex,
10. Once the cut root zone has been dipped insert into pre fertilized jiffy plugs,
11. Insert hygrometers into the propagators, replace Propagator lids and place into propagation tents,
12. Insert Propagation light,

We then began to observe the cuttings daily for the next two weeks,

The results

LED GROWN Propagation light – roots were established within 5 days, with fierce root growth in 7 and ready for transplanting – 12 out of 12 cuttings rooted 100% success rate

2 Tube Propagation Light – fluorescent – roots were established in 10 days, with fierce root growth in 13 days and ready for transplanting – 9 out of 12 cuttings rooted, 75% success rate.

The costs, once your over the initial investment stage, your set up should last for a good number of years with minimal reinvestment required, as you will only need to purchase the perishable and used items such as Nutrients, Jiffy plugs, scalpels etc.

With energy prices still due to sky rocket we were curious as to how much it would cost to run each fitting over two weeks on an 18/6 light cycle, basing the energy rate @ £0.43p per kwh.
